07 / APPLE PLATFORMS

iOS Photos APIThe right photo access, at the right moment.

Choose an iOS photo workflow by the job your app needs to do. Importing a profile picture is different from organizing a library or maintaining a selected-photo backup.

Prefer the smallest useful access boundary.

A system picker is a strong starting point when a person chooses the photos your app should import. A broader PhotoKit workflow may be appropriate for an app whose core purpose needs library access. These are product and permission decisions, not interchangeable names for the same upload button.

01 /

Define the selection task

Decide whether the user needs one image, several images, or a library management workflow. Explain the purpose before requesting broader access.

02 /

Load the selected content

Treat selection and data availability separately. A chosen asset may require additional loading, and a loading failure needs a useful retry path.

03 /

Import into app ownership

If the product needs a lasting copy, make that transfer explicit. Track the selected item, import result, and application asset separately.

04 /

Handle access changes

For PhotoKit library operations, recheck authorization and handle limited or denied states. For picker imports, handle loading failures or reselection without requiring broad library permission.

Decisions to make early
InterfaceChoose a system picker for deliberate imports when it fits the task.
Library accessUse PhotoKit only for the capabilities and scope your feature needs.
Data loadingModel cancellation, cloud availability, and unsupported representations.
TestingInclude denied access, limited access, large selections, and interrupted imports.

Common questions

Make the next
decision clearer.

Do all iOS photo features need full library access?

No. Apple provides selection-based workflows that let people share chosen items. Broader library operations have separate access requirements.

Why can a chosen photo take time to import?

Selection does not guarantee the desired data is already available to your app. Treat data loading as an asynchronous operation that may fail or be canceled.

Where should platform details be checked?

Use the current Apple documentation for your chosen API and minimum operating-system version. Test the behavior on representative devices before committing to a permission flow.
